Our body is an incredibly sophisticated machine, intricately designed to utilize resources wisely. Each organ we possess serves a purpose, but if we fail to use them, the body conserves energy by reducing their functionality.
Growing up, my father always encouraged me to write everything down on little notes. This was before the era of smartphones, and I diligently followed his advice to avoid forgetting important details. Now, as I am older, I find my memory isn’t working so well. I didn’t exercise my memory regularly, leading my body to adapt by de-emphasizing its importance.
A similar phenomenon occurs with eating disorders, for example. When someone doesn’t use their digestive system, it begins to shrink, as the body opts not to waste resources maintaining an underutilized system. Likewise, excessive use of chapstick can lead the body to reduce saliva production, as it perceives no need to moisturize the lips.
This week, I decided to establish a new routine: dedicating five minutes each morning to muscle exercises. Just two days in, I’ve rediscovered muscles I had completely forgotten. The sensation of feeling my leg muscles as I walk and my abdominal muscles as I move has been profoundly gratifying.
On a broader scale, our body is an instrument for experiencing life on this earth. If we do not fully utilize the capabilities we are endowed with, they may diminish. It’s a poignant reminder to engage actively with our physical selves to fully experience life through this remarkable vessel.
